The media should serve to help people in fulfilling their role as citizens – with rights and responsibilities – rather than just consumers. Instead, it currently often feeds us either entertainment or tragedy, giving us an emotional ride similar to that of making a shop purchase. This blog on development aims to offer the perspective of the ‘Other’ – the people in stories on developing countries normally preceded by a novelty story or advert – to show how we influence their livelihoods through the food we eat, even though it is rarely simple. It is part of a journalism project examining how conflicting land use pressures are dealt with in South America, and whether alternatives to the current trend of urbanisation can exist for better development.
